It is the policy of the Social Science Division to provide travel support for officers to attend SLA conferences. The support is offered to assist those working at organizations where limited or no travel expenses are covered and to encourage more persons to volunteer for leadership positions. The following policies and procedures will guide the granting of travel funds.
- Travel support will be granted for the Annual Conference in June and/or for the Leadership Summit in January.
- The Chair, Chair-Elect, and Program Planner-Elect will be eligible to apply for travel support for both June and January meetings. The Secretary/Treasurer and the Program Planner will be eligible to apply for travel support for the June meeting.
- It is always preferable for employers to support professional development. Funds will be granted only to those officers who receive partial or no support from their employers. Officers are expected to negotiate with their employer.
- A budget allocation will be approved each year for travel support. The amount will be adjusted to reflect available funds in the treasury and costs associated with the particular conference cities (lodging and air travel). The Secretary/Treasurer will recommend the budget allocation each year as a part of the budget proposal not to exceed 75% of the expected membership allotment from SLA.
- Prior to the conference, a written request for travel funding must be submitted for review. This request will include the name of conference, dates of attendance, estimated costs for registration, travel, and hotel along with any contribution that is being provided by the individual's employer. The request should be submitted to the Travel Review Committee. The Committee includes the Past-Chair and members named by the Chair.
